Fly Fishing 365 Days A Year Tips and tactics for making the most of a winter outing While
most anglers pack their gear away for the winter,
Jeff Yates provides tips and tactics to help you catch fish year-round.
This 10-minute video provides strategies on gear and fly selection, as
well as fishing methods designed to hook trout in the coldest of
temperatures.
Striped Bass and Brook Trout Sampling Fairfield County fly fishing Fly fishing guide Jeff Yates and three friends - Tony, Cal and
Timmy - set out to spend Independence Day enjoying the best fly fishing
Connecticut has to offer in a single day. Starting on Long Island Sound
at 4 a.m., the group headed to Holly Pond in Stamford to fly fish for
striped bass. Though the action was limited, the morning was a great
success with several small stripers landed. After a quick breakfast at
Orem's Diner in Wilton, the group headed inland to a secret brook trout stream
where the action was much faster and all enjoyed multiple hook-ups on
much lighter fly fishing tackle.
Sunrise Stripers Early Morning Action on the Sound Fly fishing guide Jeff Yates and his friend Gustavo head out to
Holly Pond on Long Island Sound for two mornings of spectacular striped
bass fishing. Inside the pond, schoolie stripers from 12-24 inches
cruise along the dam in search of shrimp and other bait. While not big
in size, the number of fish in the pond makes for excellent action and
double digit hookups are not uncommon. When fishing Holly Pond, leave
the big stuff behind and head to the water with a 6- or 7-weight rod
and intermediate sinking line. Flies should be sized according to the
fish, with small clousers, deceivers and shrimp patterns proving to be the most productive.
Two Days In Paradise Fly Fishing the Farmington River Two
days spent fishing the Farmington River in upstate Connecticut before
the opening of the state fishing season leads to plenty of fish and a
great time spent with friends. Action was best on nymphs fished deep,
but blue wing olive and hendrickson hatches also provided some late
afternoon dry fly action.
